Baby boy first of new year It could be said that Lorne Edward Gardner has been a head- line grabber since Day One. The bouncing baby boy earned the distinction of being the first new arrival in 1991 at the Saanich Peninsula General Hospital’s maternity ward. Mother Janet Gardner, 31, said her healthy eight pound, five ounce son was delivered by cea- sarian section at 8:58 a.m. on Jan. 2 — five days before he was expected. Anxious to assure Lorne of his emall claim to fame, his father, Jerry, asked doctors to deliver him at one minute past midnight on New Year’s Day, she said. Though the young Sidney mother wasn’t in as great a hurry as Jerry was, she was still happy to see Lome enter the world ahead of his rivals on the maternity ward. “I was just happy it was all over with. But I guess it is kind of a neat thing that he was the first,” she said. Saanich asks cabinet to repeal golf course order A resolution to ask the B.C. government to repeal its endorse- ment of the use of Agricultural Land Reserve farmland for golf courses was passed by Central Saanich council, Monday. Council’s resolution said the Agricultural Land Commission’s subdivision and land use regula- tions should be changed to oppose outright approval of any golf- related activities on ALR farm- land. But Ald. Arlene Box dissented, saying it was wrong to endorse “such a blanket resolution.” Council should still be allowed to judge each golf course proposal on its Own merits without the Agricultural Land Commission ruling on each application, Box said. Some Agricultural Land Reserve farmland in Central Saa- nich isn’t being put to good use and should be considered for golf course uses, she added. Ald. Jack Mar said yesterday that “ughter controls’? on the use of farmland for golf course uses would be the main benefit of giving back to the land commis- sion the powers that it lost in June, 1988. : He also said the economic via- bility of dormant farmland shouldn’t be an issue in deciding its Suitability for golf course uses. “Liability does not come into play — whether the land is profita- ble or not. Farmland should be preserved for potential future use,” he said. APPROVED AUTO REPAIR SERVICES (CAA) Wien CQ GURTON'S GARAGE LTD. TIRE LAND SIDNEY VISA xSHELL xMASTERCARD Corner of McTavish & E.
