Prairie RnEppculgianied by Ice on; * cold beer and wine store referendum The province’s Liquor Control and Licencing Branch’s appeal board has ruled a new referendum should be held on a Saanichton cold beer and wine store applica- tion. The Prairie Inn appealed the results of an April referendum in which residents were 54.8 per cent in favor of a cold beer and wine store being built on property immediately west of the Prairie Inn in Saanichton. A 60 per cent _ Majority is required for: an applica- tion to be approved. The appeal board’s decision said that the appeal was granted partially because residents of the extended care facility at Saanich Peninsula Hospital were not pol- led. Prairie Inn owner Ted Anderson said Dec. 22 he is pleased with the decision and feels it was fair for the appeal board to rule in his favor. “I think they took everything into consideration,” Anderson said., “It was a number of things, not just one. I think they made a fair and accurate decision in say- ing it should be redone.” In its decision, appeal board vice-chairman Peter Meyers said: “The overriding concern in this _ case is that the extended care facility was not enumerated and 149 votes could potentially make a difference to the audited results.” The appeal board ruled that a Sidney exploring waier play park _Sidney’s parks superintendent attended a meeting with parks’ staff in New Westminster to gather information on two water play parks there, Dec. 10. “The New Westminster parks department has prepared a pack- age of specifications, construction technics and suppliers for the con- struction of a water play park,” parks superintendent Jonathan Kelly said in a memorandum to council. The exercise is intended to give the Town suitable information to make a decision on costs and other considerations for construction of a water play park in Iroquois Park, or another location. “After completing this neces- sary research I will meet with the (Sidney) Rotary Club to agree on an acceptable plan and allow them to assess costs and investigate funding options,” Kelly said. Ald. Don Amos suggested coun- cil receive the memorandum and approve the parks superintendent to work with the Rotary Club to develop a water play park in the area. Council agreed. Bud’s back One of the first announcements coming out of newly-appointed Economic Development Minister Bud Smith’s office last week was that of a $7.5 million loan guaran- tee by the provincial government for Versatile Pacific Shipyards. Anderson said the matter will have to wait until early January for plans for a new referendum to be made. Anderson had yet to see a copy of the appeal board’s decision, which was sent to his lawyer. But he said he’s “a little nery- ous” about holding another refer- endum. The matter will likely involve Central Saanich council as taken. Anderson also alleged that an employee of Marcon Research, ,the company conducting the referen- dum, was lobbying illegally to voters before offering them a bal- lot. In his grounds for appeal Ander- son also said that employees of the Liquor Control and Licencing Branch improperly utilized their positions as employees in cam- EMERGENCY NUMBER 655-4459 5-10025 GALARAN RD. 656-1313 paigning against the applicant. well.
