News Robot brings department’s message across Robbie the Robot has an import- ant message for pint-sized visitors at the Central Saanich municipal firehall on Wallace Drive and Mt. Newton Crossroad. Fire department volunteer fire- man Forest Owens said the robot offers fire safety tips to the pre- school youngsters who visit the firehall each year as part of the community’s Kids in Central Saa- nich program. Each year, about two dozen three and four year-olds will be introduced to the fire department as part of the KICS program’s fire safety awareness lessons. The tour includes an inspection of the fire trucks and the ambu- lances, as well as the facility itself, he said. But the real crowd pleaser is the four-foot fire hydrant robot which plays pre-recorded messages on fire safety measures, Owens said. Among the tips the youngsters learn is a warning not to play with matches and how to make a simple fire escape plan for their own homes. Owens said the importance of smoke detectors, fire alarms and exit signs is also pointed out to the wide-eyed students. KICS program coordinator Bon- nie McKenzie said the tour of the firehall creates a profound impres- sion on the youngsters. “They get very excited about the visit and they’re really in awe of the firemen,” she said. “It’s actually one of the first opportunities for the kids to see professional services in the com- munity.” And the fire safety awareness ‘skills that the children learn are invaluable. It’s advice that could help save their lives, she said. “They get taught the real basics of how to get out of the home in a fire situation so that they’ll hope- fully react appropriately if it ever happens to them,” McKenzie said. And when they grow older they can lear more advanced fire drills and safety tips when the fire department visits Central Saanich schools with its fire safety house. During the course of each year, over 2,000 students in Grades 1 to 5 are taught fire evacuation drills with the aid of the fire depart- ment’s miniature model home.
