Tri-council meeting called to discuss highway Peninsula residents came through for the annual Lions/ Review Christmas Hamper Fund, pushing the fund to almost $700 over its goal with last-minute donations. Lions Club treasurer Bill Brain said the fund collected $35,680.17 in cash and food donations. “We had a wonderful response. Although the costs are not yet in, Sidney municipal treasurer Paul Edgington said the munici- pality may have to boost the $8,400 snow clearing budget with money from other maintenance areas. “It’s possible we will run over budget,” he said Friday. Crews and money normally assigned to jobs like road patching are going to clear snow off the toads. Edgington said shifts have been changed to put crews on duty earlier so sanding before the majority of drivers are on the road can be done. Early sanding prevents ice build-up and the shift change allows staff to handle the problem ~ without requiring much overtime, Edgington said. North Saanich Mayor Maurice Chazottes called the upcoming meeting an “historic” event and said various items of mutual con- cem will be coming up, other than talks about the highway. “The original idea was to dis- cuss the highway but since then there have been some additions to the agenda,” Chazottes said: “T think we’ll see more and more community interests come out.” The Vancouver Island Regional Library’s budget has been added ‘to the Jan. 5 meeting’s agenda, he said.
