Joe Boulter Victoria Be careful when : crossing sireeis Editor: I hope that by writing this letter it can help prevent another inci- dent such as the one that I wit- nessed the other night. I saw an elderly man struck down by a vehicle. It was a nice clear night, a good one for a brisk walk in the evening, and in a matter of a few seconds the lives of many were altered forever. I am not here to blame or question right or wrong of the accident but only to try and help prevent this happening to someone else. As a pedestrian you are but a small and fragile article on the roads of the town and you must be aware of all that is around you. Take the precautions when going out for that late night stroll even if it 1s down the block. Be sure to wear something light- colored or reflective. Something that may save your life. Before you walk out onto any road be sure you look and observe what is happen- ing. Because you are at a comer does not mean that you have the right of way, be conscious of what is happening or it could cost you. your life. And to the drivers of the hurling masses of metal which we so enjoy to drive, we must remember to be aware that on every corner and intersection there is the potential for a person to be there. We know who will win in an altercation of a pedestrian and the vehicle, the vehicle wins with very little damage. As compared to the repercussions this causes to those involved their families and loved ones. The impact lasts a life time and and don’t know which way to turn, ‘call the WetomeMi ijn. So the responsibil- ity is all of ours to try and protect our lives and the lives of others. Please be a defensive driver and a defensive walker. ‘Let’s keep ourselves alive to enjoy what there is to give, rather than the grief we might have to survive with each day of our life. Rita A. Dore Sidney Teachers were a positive influence Editor: In response to last week’s com- ment by Rian Martin (Concemed for the children, Reader’s Mail- box, The Review). I believe, as you do, that “educa- tion of children is a sacred night, and not just a business function of society.’ I also believe, as you do, that children should understand what sexual assault is, and that in the case of such an event, they should tell someone. However, unlike you, I have not made judgments. I took part in the Outdoor Lead- ership program at North Saanich School, and I was also taught an academic course by one of the gentlemen. I was never harassed, abused, or assaulted in any way, by : Sidney Prices Effective Dec. 27-Dec. 31/90 We Reserve the Right to Limit Quantities either man. In fact, I found them to be two individuals who had a positive influence on me. I believe this problem has been created by various’ interpretations of sexual assault, exaggeration and ignorance. I also believe that nerv- ous parents encouraging their chil- dren to come forward with perti- nent information, could in fact backfire, and encourage children to exaggerate, or make up stories. Whatever the legal outcome may be, some things will stay the same; both teachers are kind, helpful, and full of knowledge that should be greatly valued.
