Police warn Police are warning Peninsula shopkeepers and their staff to be more observant against shoplifting this Christmas season. Recently, Greater Victoria areas have been the target of professional shoplifters, who may take orders before going about a day of work in area stores, said Sidney RCMP Cst. Kim Horsman. “These people are very good at it,” Horsman said. “They charged a lady in Colwood (with shoplift- ing) after they found $40,000 worth of clothes that she took from stores on southern Vancouver Island.” The RCMP distributed a new bright red poster to Sidney stores last week warning that the police will be called when persons are shoplifiers are in town caught. shoplifting. “Business owners are getting excited, they're tired of being ripped off. People are going to be charged,” Horsman said. To help police, staff in retail stores should be more observant of customers, especially when the store is crowded, he said. “Take a more protective approach to the problem,” he said. “Tt’s easy for them-and difficult for staff to stop thefts.” Another crime on the increase during the Christmas season is thefts from vehicles. “We have thefts from cars on just about a daily basis,” Horsman said. “Anything of value should be in the trunk. Or at least cover it up if you have a hatchback.” Horsman said that during Christmas shopping, motorists may make several stops, leaving already purchased articles inside the car with a door unlocked. “It’s very tempting to people in general, not just to the opportunist, but to young people in general,” he said. Professional thieves can get into and out of a car very quickly using tools designed especially for car break-ins. “It gets expensive when you have to replace all the stuff you bought. “You'Te less likely to become a victim if you take care.” Smash and grab nets cash and recorders Front door glass was smashed before two downtown Sidney busi- ness were entered about 4:12 a.m. Dec. 6, Sidney RCMP said.
