The plant — star of Grassroots Theatre’s production of Little Shop of Horrors — has only one small flaw: it eats people. “The plant is a nice guy. Pve- got to stick up for the plant,” says performer Bill Cinar, whose opin- ion might be influenced by the fact that he provides the voice for Audrey II. “He’s quite funny. I wouldn’t mind having someone like that around,” Cinar adds. Dave Radford plays the nerdy Seymour, discover and foster mother to Audrey II in this musi- cal spoof of B-horror flicks. Even though Seymour raises Audrey II on his own blood, Radford doesn’t like the plant. “The plant — he’s a liar and he’s suckering Seymour into this whole deal about becoming rich and famous when all the plant wants is world conquest,” Radford said. “When the plant starts eating people, you start believing the plant is not nice,” he added. “He’s hungry and he’s got to eat people — unfortunately. I don’t see much evil in that,” Cinar counters. A SKID ROW DREAM of someplace green mesmerizes Audrey, played by Donna Heighes. “Kids are going to hate the plant because he eats people.” Still, Cinar hopes at least a few people recognize Audrey II’s finer points, such as his great sense of rhythm when shaking his roots. Donna Heighes plays Audrey, a pathetic clerk in the skid row flower shop who dreams of green suburbia where she can “cook like Betty Crocker and look like Donna Reed.” Thanks to the fast-growing Aud- rey II, Heighes said Audrey gets all the real-life greenery she could want. Excellent coordination between the student puppeteers and Cinar brings the plant alive, Heighes said. “That plant — you’d swear that Continued on Page A15 people — unfortunately. | don’t see much evil in that’ 55 This handful of dust, the earth, is one For further reading material and/or c a 294 It Teaches: Bahai home.
