About ten volunteers worked on the project in Central Saanich, Saturday. Association works to help cutthroat spawn Recent flood damage to a creek enhancement project at Sand Hill Creek in Central Saanich was remedied by volunteer workers, Saturday. Haig-Brown Fly Fishing Associ- ation spokesman Dave Lock said damage done to previous enhance- ment work by last month’s torren- tial downpours needed to be repaired before the cutthroat tout run begins in late January. About ten members of Lock’s association and the Central Saa- nich Lions Club worked to place two 24-foot logs across the creek to redirect the flow of water. _ The move was part of a scheme to rebuild steps for the sea-run cutthroat trout to help with their annual migration upstream. By interrupting the flow of water, the fish will be able to make their way above a culvert to pools of water where they will grow to maturity, he said. “This should mean the trout will be able to spawn again,” he said. Attempts to drop two four-tonne rocks into the stream were aban- doned when lifting equipment proved unable to handle the load, he said. But one rock was success- fully lowered into place. Early in the new year, volunteers will break the remaining rocks up with jack hammers and use smaller pieces to further help “improve the habitat of the fish,” he said. Rain record shattered ai airporl’s weather office If you’ve memory extends back about 50 years and you don’t recall the last time you saw so much rain in one year — well, you're not mistaken. More rain fell on the Peninsula this year than ever recorded before, a Victoria Weather Office spokes- man said yesterday. And with nearly two weeks left in 1990 there’s still time for the new record to eclipse the old one, Jim Steele said. So far 1,122.6 millimeters of rain have fallen in 1990 at the weather office at Victoria Airport in North Saanich as of 10 p.m. last night. This compares to the previous ‘record of 1099.8 millimeters of precipitation, which fell in 1948. Since rain measurements were first recorded at the airport in 1940, there has been an average annual rainfall of 854.5 millimet- ers. But last month’s torrential downpours tipped the scales tow- ards the new record, Steele said. A total of 270.4 millimeters of rain fell at the airport in Novem- ber, which was just over double the monthly average of 130.8 milli- meters. In fact, November of 1990 set a new monthly record by edging the 1955 figure of 267 millimeters, he said. However, the Peninsula got off lightly, compared to downtown Victoria, which received about 50 per cent more rain last month. — Normally protected by a rain shadow offered by the Olympic Mountains, the provincial capital was the victim of unusual weather patterns, Steele said. Typically, more rain falls on the Peninsula than in Victoria. But last month, the Malahat mountain range acted as a buffer against the some of the bad weather, he said. Last year’s efforts to help the trout run proved very successful with the return of “good num- bers” of trout to the spawning grounds upstream, Lock said. In the past several years, the fish retuming to spawn have declined in numbers due to a loss of natural habitat and due to overfishing, he said. Hence, efforts to enrich the natu- ral habitat of the fish in the narrow stream have been undertaken by the Haig-Brown Fly Fishing Asso- ciation for the past couple of years.
