Weather report — very slight chance of snow for Christmas If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, then dream on, because you're more likely to get rained on, the weather man says. Most Christmas Days on the Peninsula have been mild and wet over the past 20 years, a Victoria Weather Service specialist said last week. Mike Newman said statistics show there has only been one snowfall on Dec. 25 in this period — and that was in 1971. About nine centimeters of snow fell that day at Victoria Airport, where the weather office. is located. Prior to that, the last Christmas that Santa Claus was able to use his reindeer-drawn sleigh in the area was in 1964, he said. “Snow is a real treat at Christ- mas in Greater Victoria,” New- man said. In fact, rain has been the order of the day for 13 of the last 20 Christmas Days. In 1972, a whopping 72.9 milli- meters of rain fell on the airport while people were celebrating the Yuletide. By way of contrast, 1988 saw the highest amount of sunshine since 1970, with the sun appearing for about seven and a half hours, he said. The sun has actually appeared for three hours or more on eight Christmases in the past 20 years. The warmest day of present- Swapping and cracker-pulling was in 1980, when the barometer reached 16 degrees Celsius, New- man said. Not surprisingly, the coldest day was in 1971 when the temperature dipped down to minus four degrees Celsius. Since 1970, the average Christ- mas Day low has been around freezing point in the morning | while the afternoon has warmed to about seven degrees Celsius, he said. 5 Port Sidney OM 1st ANNUAL New Year’s Eve Dinner Dance *Superb Buffet Dinner |*Dancing to your Favourite Music *Party Favours | *Champagne at Midnight $65” per couple TICKETS AVAILABLE AT: THE RUMRUNNER 656-5643 == THE RUMRUNNER WO 656-5643 _ 9881 SEAPORT PLACE, SIDNEY Fea A21 e offer a complete range of legal services, both personal and corporate.
