credit, the novice director
eschews the often heavy
hand of the first-timer, intel-
ligently opting to let the
compelling, rich story un- —
fold at its own pace while
uniformly fine performan-

ces (especially by Costner, —

McDonnell and Greene)
make these characters truly
live and breathe. Most im-
pressive, though, is the

honest, respectful depiction of the Indian
lifestyle, which has never before been so
faithfully presented. Also give credit to Orion
Pictures for giving Costner a free hand inthe _
crucial areas of running time (a remarkably
fast three hours) and the use of subtitles
during the Indian language sequences.
Respectful, moving, humorous, panoramic
and intelligent, Dances With Wolves is first-
rate story telling, grand cinema and a new
_ hope for a near dead genre's future. ****
