To Costner’s considerable credit, the novice director eschews the often heavy hand of the first-timer, intel- ligently opting to let the compelling, rich story un- — fold at its own pace while uniformly fine performan- ces (especially by Costner, — McDonnell and Greene) make these characters truly live and breathe. Most im- pressive, though, is the honest, respectful depiction of the Indian lifestyle, which has never before been so faithfully presented. Also give credit to Orion Pictures for giving Costner a free hand inthe _ crucial areas of running time (a remarkably fast three hours) and the use of subtitles during the Indian language sequences.
