One of the team’s two coaches, Rob Montgomery, said a 10-4 loss to Parksville Sunday night was mainly due to manpower prob- lems. With less than a dozen players making the trip to Parksville, the Eagles “just ran out of steam,” he said. “Our problem was we got tired. We didn’t have enough bodies and we also did ourselves in with penalties,” he added. Though only down by 5-2 going into the third period, the Eagles hopes of getting back into the game were dealt a crushing blow by a five-minute Parksville pow- erplay. A high-sticking penalty call against one of the Eagles players left the already tired and over-— worked team short-handed, Mont- gomery said. ‘Midget Eagles hold strong The Peninsula Midget Rep Eagles hockey team experienced mixed fortunes in action against Powell River on the weekend. A 6-3 loss on Saturday was avenged by a 5-2 victory Sunday a’ternoon, assistant coach Paul Johnson said. Sunday’s win was well-deserved as the Eagles played “a hard fast-skating’’ game to turn the tables on the visiting team. “We played an all-round solid defensive game, with plenty of good backchecking,” he said. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first period, the Eagles took charge of the game and widened their lead to 4-1 by the end of the second period. And some excellent goaltending by Dave Oswald helped the Eagles to preserve their three-goal advan- tage right up until the end of play, Johnson said. Outstanding play from Brad Cairns and Jim Anderson also helped the Eagles to tum in an inspired performance, he said. In Saturday’s loss, the Eagles looked vulnerable on defence after a week-long layoff and the team played below-par throughout the game, he said. Some terrific saves by the Pow- ell River goaltender also frustrated the Eagles’ offence for much of the game. The team’s record now stands at 11 wins, one tie and four losses. JN FOR TH And Parksville didn’t squander a golden opportunity as the home team racked up three more goals during the five-minute stretch. In earlier action, the Eagles played to a hard-earned 6-6 tie against the Saanich Braves, Dec. 4. Montgomery’s coaching partner Mike Mowat said the Eagles once again fielded an under-strength squad, which was due to school commitments by some players. Making a very slow Start, the Eagles quickly found themselves down 3-0 early in the first period. But the home-team players regrouped and clawed their way back to tie the game 3-3 by the end of the second penod. Swinging into high gear at last in the third period, the Eagles held on to a 6-5 lead until four minutes from the end of the game. But a five-minute high-sticking penalty cost the Peninsula team dearly as Saanich tied the game with a powerplay goal seconds before the final buzzer, Mowat said. He league record Chris Wallace was the Eagles’ Standout, scoring two goals and two assists. The team’s recent checkered form is due to a weak defence and not enough consistency in attack, he said. “We're giving up too many goals and offensively the chemis- try isn’t there,” Mowat said. __ These days we’re always miss- ing a guy off each line which makes it difficult for things to click into place.” Adding to the team’s woes was a bitter lose suffered by the Penin- sula team in Sooke, Dec. 3. After only about seven minutes of play the game was called off after a brawl between about a dozen players from Westcomm Broncos and the Eagles, Mowat said. Later in the week, the game was — awarded to the Broncos despite the fact the Sooke team had six players ejected from the game, as com- pared to the Eagles’ five ejections.
