1 News _ Students at North Saanich Mid- Wie School cleaned out their pock- ets and their piggy banks to help children in the Third World recent- ly. 7 and 8 loaded carved-out pump- kins with close to $500 worth of coins over five days just prior to Halloween. The winning class — the Saa- wiich Psychos Division 7 — filled ' five and a half pumpkins with coins, mostly pennies. _UNICEF’s Peninsula represen- tative John Hopper was extremely impressed with the fundraising effort. Raising about $1 per student a was excellent,” Hopper said. : © Teacher organizer Phil Large m Said the battle for the winning class was close, with two classes in close contention. “Some kids came and said there are no pennies left at home,” Large said. This year’s drive was a first for the student body at North Saanich and it was hastily organized, Large said. “We plan to do it again next year and provide prizes for each of the three grades,” he said. The coin was.poured into several large buckets to be counted and taken in to the bank. Hopper said it would be a couple of weeks until a final tally could be reached. *Ferry out of service The Mill Bay Ferry will be out of service until tomorrow follow- ing a mechanical breakdown Nov. 17. The ferry has been off the Brentwood Bay to Mill Bay route since the breakdown occurred. Parts to repair the main plane- tary gear set and clutch assembly were located in Hong Kong and. New Zealand, following an exten- sive search. B.C. Ferries planned to make repairs the ferry as soon as the parts arrive but estimated the ferry » would not be back in service until Nov. 29 at the earliest. ae Winners drawn A $50 bag of gold loonies was the top prize in the Monday Bees raffle, drawn at the Peninsula Community Association craft fair Sunday.
