The Sidney Rotary Club, which has been active in the community since 1946. In that time the club has spon- sored community projects ranging from buying band instruments for North Saanich Secondary School to Wakefield Manor, a residential complex for seniors which opens next Saturday. ~ The club has also contributed to international Rotary projects including Polio Plus, a $222 mil- lion world-wide vaccination pro- ject to eliminate polio and other common childhood diseases. Operation Eyesight is another international project backed by local Rotarians. The mix of community and international projects attracted current president Dan Rippen to the club 16 years ago. “J just felt I should be doing my share for the community,” Rippen said. Now administrator of Resthaven Lodge, he enjoys the mix of fel- lowship, learning and service pro- vided by the club. Basic to Rotary is the classifica- tion system, under which one rep- resentative of each profession or business is admitted to each club. The system ensures a variety of professions and skills are included +n club membership — a valuable asset when doing projects like the 24-unit Wakefield Manor senior citizens’ complex. Rippen said the club sponsors projects for all age groups. “We try to look at all areas of the community.” In its first three years the 17- member club provided band instruments for the local high school. weekend and participation in Peninsula Bingo also raise money for service projects.
