The Parkland team handily won all three of its games to finish top in a Peninsula schools invitational tournament, which was held at Parkland and Stelly’s schools on Friday and Saturday. Parkland beat Kwalikum 57-46 in the final of the event. “We played really well in the final and throughout the tourna- ment,” coach Margaret Metcalfe said. “We've got a good shooting team and a couple of really big people for rebounds. I think the players will work well together and look to each other during games,” she said. In earlier action, Parkland brushed aside Claremont by 57-28 and dumped Chemainus by 76-21, she said. Leading the scoring for the Panthers was Joleen Hook, who notched up 57 points in the three games. Genea Grist scored 38 points, while Natasha Kipot and Lesley Lutes each scored 12 points. “We've got a pretty strong team and should do well in AA league action this season. “We should be able to make it into the top three,” Metcalfe said. Stelly’s didn’t fare so well. The Stingers posted two losses and onc victory in the six-team tourna- ment. Coach Peter Mason said the relatively young and inexper- ienced team lost 77-38 to Kwali- kum and 67-48 to Ladysmith. But the Central Saanich team finished the tournament on a brighter note with a 49-13 win over Chemainus. Leading the scoring for Stelly’s was Erin Barber, who amassed 53 points. — Mason said he expects this to be a development year for his team but that four-year veteran Jean Lynn should provide some valua- ble leadership for the Stingers. “I don’t see that we'll do any- thing dramatic this year.
