It was with trepidation that we checked the roster to see who would be taking care of her post- op. I was filling in for someone else on afternoons the following day, and it turned out to be me. Anyway, I wasn’t going to let it spoil my day. She was a tall, pleasant-look- ing woman, possibly in her late@® @ 60s. Her greying hair was fas- tened back in a bun. She wore warm slacks and a well-worn woolen sweater. Her shoes were sturdy and she carried leather work gloves. Her bag was full of clippings from rosebushes. She picked out a twig loaded with bright red rose hips. “Did you know that three of these have as much vitamin Cas an orange?” she asked. I said I hadn’t known, and she went on to tell of other things she gleaned in her wild harvest. I liked the lady, and listened with interest. When I let her out at her corner, I hoped we'd meet again. = We did, and sooner than I ex- a % pected. nS When I got to work the next retired director of nursing, was in a private room down at the end of the hall on surgery. I did a quick check before entering: uniform spotless, no nail polish, wedding ring only, hair neat, nylons runless and freshly polished shoes. I took a deep My patient was sleeping.
