News The Review - Wednesday, November 21,1990 — A29 Voters vexed with government 2 Disillusioned residents pulled no punches Nov. 13 at a meeting geuth Saanich-Gulf Islands (NDP) MP Lynn Hunter, complaining about the Goods and Services Tax, government pensions, the senate and the deficit. Hunter agreed with the 30-plus residents who attended the meet- ing in the Brentwood Cultural Centre, saying recent government decisions in Ottawa have tarnished a deen of all politicians. esidents complained about "senators voting themselves a $150 per day bonus for attending senate meetings and about the indexed $ pensions which take effect after an - MP retires following six years’ of Service. Hunter said she had spoken in _the New Democratic party caucus ®eavainst the pensions. “Tt’s ordinary Canadians who ~ are paying for that.” She said the pensions are based on the assumption that serving on government makes a person less employable once they are no lon- ger in government. She felt the experience she is getting as an MP is making her more employable and suggested the pensions should not take effect until age 60 or 65. Issues like the pensions are contributing to the public’s dis- trust of politicians, Hunter noted. Other residents questioned the Conservative appointments to the Senate, which residents saw as a ploy to increase the Conservative majority in the Senate so the Goods and Services Tax would be passed. Hunter said the senate appoint- ments are being challenged in court. “The use and manipulation of the Senate for the Goods and Services Tax is just incredible,” she added. The pensions, proposed legisla- tion to give parliamentarians spe- cial protection against legal action and the special health care pro- vided to government members are _ all outrageous, one speaker said. “Members of Parliament have voted themselves into a position of being an elite class,” he added. Another speaker noted govern- ment members were voting them- “selves expensive benefits while Canada is still facing a massive deficit. Hunter said some of the mood in Ottawa is created by the attitude expressed by the Prime Minister. “He’s a Street fighter and that’s the kind of tone he sets,” she said, / adding that she was surprised to find herself heckling the Prime Minister in parliament. But she BURN SMART TO MINIMIZE AIR POLLUTION FROM YOUR WOODSTOVE: Don't burn on poor air-quality days. Changes which would give goy- emment members special protec- tion against investigation will not have to come before parliament before being implemented, Hunter said. The changes are seen as part of the internal operations of the House of Commons and do not require government vote, she explained. Hunter said her view of govern- ment has changed since she was elected in November 1988. The goverment is not respon- sive to the people, so making any change in Ottawa will take a long time, Hunter said. She recalled sitting on a joint ' environmental committee which came out with a report recom- mending environmental change. None of the recommendations in the report have ever been imple- mented, although the report was endorsed by the government mem- bers of the committee. “I went down there thinking I’m going to change the world — dammit,” she said. “Tt will take longer than I expected.” NRS BLOCK BROS.
