Feature TheReview Wait to wrap Christmas gifts on board airplane The security team at the Victoria Airport is asking Christmas trave- lers to wait until they are on board the aircraft before wrapping pre- sents. Many travelers are delayed and others are inconvenienced by hav- ing presents opened by Transport Canada security because some carry-on luggage items cannot be distinguished as being harmless, said Transport Canada security coordinator Derek Brown. “The less (wrapped items) peo- ple carry with them the faster we can process people,” Brown said. “A lot of items can go through (the X-ray scanner) providing there is no lead content or other blocking agents,’ Brown said. Fre- quently, travelers before Christmas are held up as security unwraps presents to find lead crystal glass- es or other items that contain lead. Also, items the travelling public may not consider to be dangerous, but are potentially flammable or explosive, are seized. Well-used items that have been seized from carry-on luggage include pressurized deodorants, disposable lighters, barbecue star- ters, hair spray, shaving cream and most knives, scissors, letter open- ers and knitting needles. Over the years, security officers have seized a water pistol (because it could contain ammonia or another harmful substance), home-canned salmon (potentially explosive if the can contained gasoline), and a tourist’s collec- tion of matchbooks (potentially flammable) from carry-on lug- gage. But many of those items can travel in a passenger's checked luggage and arrive at the passen- gers destination at the same time the passenger does. “Anything we deny transporta- tion to can go back to ticket agents,’ Brown said. “There are methods for shipping dangerous goods by air.” Pamphlets and information about: what can be taken with carry-on luggage, what should be stowed away with checked lug- gage, and what can’t be taken at all, are available at travel agents and from the security office at the airport. Airport officials remind those who will be travelling this Christ- mas season that cabin baggage must not be larger than 9 X 16 X 20-inches to fit under your seat.. Larger bags must be checked. Of passengers have more than one bag, and the total size exceeds the size allowance, one or more of the bags or items will have to be checked. Ask your airline representative if you are in doubt about the size of your cabin luggage. WHAT'S YOUR HURRY, B.C.?
