The site of Fort Victoria was the area roughly bounded by Wharf Street, Broughton Street, Government Street and View Street. Today, in- laid bricks along the western sidewalk of Government Street and pla- ques delineate the original site. The fort was composed of a stockade with a bastion at the southwest corner and anotherin the northeast corner. Gates into the compound were along the west and east walls. Interior buildings for residences, offices and a school were laid out, leav- ing a large, central courtyard area. As the town of Victoria grew, the fort became an obstacle to development. In 1860 the first of the bastions was dismantled and most of the stockade fence.
