Sports BATTLING FOR THE puck in recent hockey action, Penin- ~ sula Junior B Eagles players skate towards a hard-eamed victory over the Saanich Junior B Braves. The Peninsula Junior B Eagles hockey team reversed its losing ways with an 11-8 win over the Saanich Braves, Nov. 6. Assistant coach Jim Townley said the Eagles dominated the action from start to finish. “We dominated, giving 100 per cent, particularly in the third per- iod,” he said. “Our consistency has really paid off in the last few games and we ve become a much more physi- cally powerful team.” The Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the first period and held on to a two goal advantage through much of the game with a very attacking style of play. After playing some of the top- ranked teams in the province, the Parkland senior boys’ volleyball team placed third at the Island Championships Saturday, taking one of three Island berths to the provincial event. Coach Lome Chan said Park- land played near its best and did very well to make it as far as the semi-finals, where it lost to Nan- aimo’s John Barsby Secondary. -After notching up eight wins and three losses, Parkland gave the fifth-ranked team in the province a run for its money in semi-finals, he said. “We fought them tooth and nail. And we had an outstanding second game but they played an excellent defensive game and won most of the crucial points,” he said. Barsby earned its 15-6, 15-12 wins on the strength of having a very talented and experienced team that included three provincial players, he said. Named to the tournament's all- star team for their consistently fine play were Parkland players Justin Gayler and Steve Lefebvre, he said. Dylan Gayler was also given an honorable mention by the tourna- ment’s organizers, he said. In earlier round-robin action, the Panthers dumped Spectrum by 15-4, 15-4, and then earned an impressive victory over Campbell River’s Carihi, he said. After trouncing Claremont by 15-7, 15-2, a confident and well- focused Parkland team then defeated a highly-regarded Nan- aimo side to earn a berth to the semi-final round, he said. After dropping the first game by 7-15, Parkland rallied to come back and win the next two games against Nanaimo by 15-9, 15-3, Chan said. The Panthers will join the tour- hament’s winner G.P. Vanier and finalist Barsby in the provincial high school championship in Kelowna from Nov. 21-24, he said. And if Parkland continues to play so well, it could provide some major upsets at the B.C. champi- onships, he said. 7120 WEST SAANICH ROAD Celestial Shoes BRENTWOOD BAY VILLAGE SQUARE 652-6640 Alderman Re-elect Central Saanich VOTE: November 17th TheReview Wednesday, November 14,1990 — B5 Junior Eagles becoming consisient best for last, the Eagles players fired home four goals in the third period, he said.
