Excellent stay-at-home bust- ness for the person who wants to turn his or her living quarters into a workshop/warehouse. No experi- ence necessary. Wages low or non-existent, satisfaction high. Interested? Just become a crafts person. “T work in the kitchen — there’s fabric in the dining room and in the living room,” says Roxana _ Maitland of North Saanich, who ventured into home crafts this year with Fireside Creations. “We figure I make about three cents an hour.” Friend Jackye Mills, also of North Saanich, is a veteran crafts person with 20 years’ experience. “You have to fight for the kit- chen table,” she says. She finds money is the last reason for taking up home crafts. Mills agrees selling her own work is hard. “Criticism is not an easy thing to take. You get very personally attached to each piece,” she said. She suspects most crafts people are better at making crafts than selling their own work. The hectic just-before-the-sale blitzes to get everything done also take their toll on the crafts person. “It’s a real shock to your system to be on the go every minute — you're running, you're going, you're producing — and it’s hard to sit down and talk to people.” Maitland agreed. “I’m going to find it hard to sit still for two days,” she said.
