ef More gifts this past week, and I worry about this. What on earth @ does one do in return? Joe Berber- Starkey gave me “Winter Pleas- ure,” Noel Richardson’s latest cookbook, full of what she terms Herbs and Comfort Cooking, and Bett Bugslag brought along a jar of quince jam, and another of quince chutney. I think it is called “an embar- sment of riches,” and I am = mestly overcome with gratitude * to all you dear folk! Yesterday, before this deluge of Tain started, I threw over all the indoor jobs that seem to be forever leaning on me, put on my elderly warm gardening jacket, and dis- covered, in the bulging pockets several items of interest. There was a large packet of F Stokes Longstanding Bloomsdale spinach (1 wonder if the seed will sprout after a summer in a jacket pocket?), a number of shabby Kleenex, all sorts of bits of string, rope and a host of nylon-stocking ) ties, several small stones, a few ig plant tags, a broken pencil, a clothes peg and a grocery list I don’t understand this last item. I'd never wear this jacket downtown! L The dahlias are siill going great guns, bless ’em all. If is wonderful to be able fo go _ outside af this time * of year and bring » Iinabig bouquet of wildly beautiful flowers.’ “himself” calls me Mrs. Cooper every time I wear it, and would divorce me if I attempted to leave the garden with it on. ~» Incidently, Mrs. Cooper used to be in a T.V. ad for dog food. She was supposed to be a dog breeder, and appeared wearing gum boots, soiled trousers and a very odd- looking slouch hat. This is the way I look when out tending the tur- nips. Anyway, sorry about that ... I put on my warm jacket and my gar- ¢ dening gloves, collected the shovel, trowel and all my packages of bulbs and marched outside to plant every single one, no matter what. I did it too, but planting turned out to be the easiest part. First I had to weed out all the (MEL COUVELIER] WORKING FOR | SAANICH & THE ISLANDS -| Mel Couvelier, MLA for Saanich & the Islands | wants to know your cen- cerns. Gardening _ Pocket of surprises in Cooper’s coat dead and dying summer annuals, including a very invasive poppy which has taken over in one long planter box. I wish I knew its real name, but have been told it is called a Welsh poppy: I had to dig out all sorts of its long, strong, succulent roots before planting any bulbs. Before long I discarded my gar- dening gloves and dug down in eamest ... these roots go deep! “himself” appeared on the scene, and said, “Would you just look at those hands,” I have to admit they were not just dirty, but slimy with mud, but why worry about things like that? It does wash off (most of it, anyway) Yippee! I got every bulb into the soil, and came inside just elated, freez- ing cold, of course, but full of anticipation. Those bulbs should give us a lot of pleasure next spring. c) % VTWOOD CLEANERS 7142 West Saanich Rd. 652-5811 As you may have noticed, most garden centers have bulbs at dis- count prices right now. It is not too late to plant, so, for heaven’s sake get some, tuck them into the ground, or into big planter pots. The pleasure they'll give makes it a very worthwhile effort. I picked the last of the gladiola yesterday, still in bud. They were very late this year as I didn’t plant them until the end of June. Now I will be able to dig the corms out, and bring them into a warm place for a couple of weeks to dry. When I can remove that shrivel- led bit on the bottom of each I'll shake them in a bag containing sulphur, and put them in legs of ancient panty-hose and hang them in the garage for the winter. The chrysanthemums are taking a terrible beating from the wind and rain, but until I can rid the greenhouse of whiteflies, there is little point in hauling inside the big pots they are growing in. The dahlias are still going great guns, bless *em all. It is wonderful to be able to go outside at this time of year and bring in a big bouquet of wildly beautiful flowers. I was somewhat disconcerted, ‘though, to find that the flowers didn’t come in unattended. I found a small snail on the bathroom mirror (above a tiny vase of mums), one on the coffee table, enjoying the view, and a good sized snail inside the low vase holding the flowers. A thrill a minute in this house. 3+‘ FloristsandGiftShop gi, ax]. 652-9149 DAILY DELIVER NICH PENINSULA HOSP r @® 45-7816 E. SAANICH RD.
