Here’s some of the fips they learned: If possible, try and escape by using a pre-planned escape route through the house and crouch down af all times to avoid smoke inhalation. If the bed- event of a house fire, the Sidney volunteer fire department inspec- tor said. Larry Buchanan said the Penin- sula’s three municipal fire depart- ments are instructing Grade 3 children on fire prevention and on how to deal with a house fire. He said a model fire safety house, built in 1987, is proving invaluable in conducting fire drills with the children. Since the small two-storey structure can be towed to elemen- tary schools, the fire departments take turns in touring all the schools in their areas once a year. The building has a bedroom and a living room, and the children take tums pretending to be asleep in bed or in the living area prior to the start of the fire drill, he said. Instruction is split equally between procedures for escaping a house blaze and fire prevention tips, he said. Built by funding from Peninsula businesses, the model fire safety home has been very well received by the childrens’ teachers, who are made aware that nine out of ten fire-related deaths in B.C. are caused by house fires, he said. “Holding the drills in this house is the best way of getting the information into the home,” he said. “The children end up teaching the parents.” Along with the evacuation drill, the students are shown a video and given a lecture, as well as being given worksheets to plan an escape route from their own homes, he said. The worksheets are later reviewed by fire department staff and returned to the students with additional helpful comments. VEEKLY CHRISTIIAS SPECIAL #.
