Royal Canadian Air Cadet
Pamela Smith of Sidney was one
of 60: young people who received
@uke of Edinburgh silver awards
~ from Lieutenant-Governor David
Lam Oct. 27.

The 17-year-old Parkland stu-
dent is now in her fourth year as a
member of the 676 Kittyhawk
Corps. She plays trumpet in the
cadet marching band and also
plays in the Parkland Secondary
stage and concert band.

Day service at the cenotaph, she
played the last post.

Prince Philip, Smith met chal-
lenges in public service, expedi-
tions, skills and fitness.

For public service she worked as
a volunteer fund raiser for the
Heart Fund! and for organizations
other than cadets.

Her expedition was a seven-day
hike of the 70 kilometre West
Coast Trail.

She met the fitness requirements
by achieving the required Canada
Fitness test levels and obtaining
her Bronze Medallion in life-
saving.

Her special skill was music.

Smith received a silver pin and a
certificate of SU

Cadet earns Duke of Edinburgh award

After graduating next June she
plans to attend the University of
Victoria.

The award is open to Canadians
between 14 and 25. Bronze awards
are for those over 14; silver for
those over 15 and gold for those
over 16.

The awards were presented by
the Lieutenant-Governor David
Lam at Government House in
Victoria.
