UNABLE TO FEND off two tackles at once, a Stelly’s Stingers rugby player is caught in mid-flight as he sprints for the try line in Junior level playoff action against Esquimalt at Stelly’s Secondary, Nov. 6. Stingers run oui of fime in 10-9 upset loss fo SMU The Stelly’s Junior rugby team lost by a single point to St. Michael’s University School in Greater Victoria high school play- off action, Thursday. Despite a late rally, the Sungers were edged out by 10-9 in the semi final of the tournament, coach Mark Wyatt said. Playing in wet and muddy con- ditions, the Stungers played their best game of the season against a very powerful SMU team, he said. “It was a really wet and mucky day that didn’t allow us to move the ball around much among the backs. It became a battle of the forwards,” he said. Despite being down by 10-0 at the half-time mark, Stelly’s stil gave SMU a run for its money in early action, Wyatt said. “It waS very much a see-saw game,” he said. But the Stingers’ tenacity and hard-work began to pay off mid- way through the second half, he said. A try by Steve Thomas was converted by George White and -was followed several minutes later by a penalty kick, again to the credit of White, he said. Trailing by only a single point, the Stingers pressed hard for another try and kept SMU very much on the defensive in the final minutes, he said. But time was not on Stelly’s side, and the SMU team weathered the onslaught to earn a berth in the finals of the playoffs. “Another five minutes of play and I think we would have clinched the game,” Wyatt said. In earlier action, the Stingers defeated Esquimalt by 12-7 in the quarter finals at Stelly’s Secon- dary, Nov. 6. RE-ELECT |NORMA | SEALEY MAYOR OF SIDNEY A PROVEN “ELECTED” RECORD OF EXPERIENCE — INTEGRITY DEDICATION — ACHIEVEMENT VOTE — SEALEY On November 17th VOTE — sponsored by committee to elect Norma Sealey SEALEY : TO ALL MY SIDNEY FRIENDS: Wyatt said it was a tough match that tested Stelly’s mettle and forced the home team to dig deep to come up with a winning effort. “Esquimalt applied a lot of pressure and forced us to make a lot of errors. They were a really aggressive team,” he said. But some very balanced back line attacking play helped the home team to move the ball upfield to provide many dangerous counter-attacks, he said. And two fine solo efforts by the game’s standout, Matt Gummell, provided both of Stelly’s tries, he said. With a try in each half and one conversion by Jonathan Dereus, Stelly’s was able to hold off Esquimalt to seize the hard-fought victory, he said. | AM SUPPORTING MARIE ROSCOFOR MAYOR AND ASK THAT YOU SUPPORT HER TOO.
