The pair continue to shatter Island records and will be challenging provin- cial records soon. Safe Halloween A lot of files were opened by Sidney RCMP officers Halloween night, but there were no major incidents. Cst. Brian Hodgkin said over a dozen auxiliary policemen supple- mented the regular force, for a show of protection on the Beacon Avenue foot patrol. “T think the rain dampened the enthusiasm, not to mention you couldn’t walk down Beacon Ave- nue without bumping into a policeman,’ Hodgkin said. A total of 42 files were opened for all activity Wednesday evening and early Thursday. Most were a result of liquor charges “and lots of firecracker and fireworks seizures.” As all fireworks are now illegal to possess — following municipal bylaws allowing them to be pur- chased and set off on private property by those over 18 years from Oct. 24 to Nov. 1 — police in all parts of the Peninsula will seize fireworks and. firecrackers. Two hurdles cleared, one remains for De Pol Peninsula athlete Chad De Pol, 18, completed the double last week by winning both the high school senior boys’ league title and the Island championships. De Pol set a new course record while tiiumphing in the Vancouver Island high school cross country championships at Beacon Hill Park, Thursday. Hot on De Pol’s heels for much of the race was fellow Peninsula runner Graham Schulz, 17, who placed runner-up. De Pol beat about 100 competi- tors to win the race in a true champions’s style with a personal best time of time of 22 minutes and 26 seconds. Schulz’s time was 22:48. De Pol said he’s been in top form recently and had no trouble carving up the 7,000-metre course to win the Island’s title for the third time in a row. “T felt really good to win again,” he said. “Now I’m confident about com- peting in the B.C. championships. The top 25 finishers in both the boys’ and girls’ Island champion- ships events qualified to compete in the B.C. championships. Other Peninsula competitors to qualify for the B.C. finals at Thurs- day’s meet were Alana Eeg and Kristi Gregory. Central Saanich runner Eeg placed 12th while Gregory, who lives in Sidney and runs cross country for the Parkland Panthers, placed 14th. In earlier cross country league action Chad De Pol clinched the Greater Victoria senior boys’ high school series with his seventh consecutive meet victory, Nov. 5. His perfect record of seven straight wins was completed with an easy victory at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre fields. De Pol finished the 7,150-metre course with a 23:40 time to beat a strong field of about 50 competi- tors. Up-and-coming cross country running talent Andrea De Pol placed runner-up in the girls’ ser- ies with a second place finish behind the highly-regarded runner Shannon Bowles, at Juan de Fi. Andrea De Pol finished the 4,900- metre event with a 19:16 time. Those results combined wit other season results, are impres sive. She placed runner-up in si races this season and placed third in one race, she said. Andrea De Pol’s points total is 97, which is 20 points ahead of third place finisher Laura Verm ing.
