Coast’s earliest lighthouse marks harbor approach

Fisgard Ligh-
thouse was il-
luminated for the
first time. The lighthouse,
now the oldest functioning

western coastline. It was
constructed in 1859 to mark
the approach to Esquimalt
and Victoria along the Strait
of Juan de Fuca.

The previous year the United

first permanent lighthouse

northern side. Construction of
Fisgard Lighthouse by the
British Government for the
Colony of Vancouver Islandindi-
cates the rising importance of
Vancouver Island and B.C. to
Britain and the international
marine traffic. Indeed, in 1860
some 1,170 vessels arrived at
Victoria.

KEEPING SHIPS AFLOAT and off the rocks is the job of the Fisgard Lighthouse, which has
served its function since 1860. It was the first permanent lighthouse in operation on

John Wright. Wright later con-
structed Angela College and the
residences of Woodlands, Fair-
field, Pentrelew and the Richard
Carr home. He is generally ac-
knowledged as the first profes-
sional architect to practise in
Victoria.

The lighthouse took only eight
months to build. The tower for
the light, and two-storey dwell-
ing house attached to the tower,
were made of local brick. The
iron interior staircase leading to
the light was designed by
Wright himself. By the summer
of 1860, the lighthouse was

finished. It only awaited instal-
lation of the lantern and lighting
apparatus, which had been or-
dered from England. This in-
stallation was complete in
mid-November when Fisgard
was first illuminated. As a foot-
note, Race Rocks Lighthouse
came into operation the follow-
ing month, in December 1860.
