We've all heard such tales — they oc- casionally make the front pages of supermarket tabloids. Sometimes, they arouse curiosity about what it would be like to be a twin. Sometimes, they're dismissed as urban myth. Nobody in the Wallace fami- ly would dismiss the idea of soulmate twins. Brian and Elizabeth Wallace have four adult children. Their sons, Grant and Scott, are fraternal (non-identical) twins and were born three and a half years before Sue and Shirley. The older twins are described as “like night and day in looks, ideas, attitudes, and personalities,” but all in the Wallace family recognize the incredible bond between the younger twins. It’s a bond that Elizabeth says makes each of her daughters “like one half of a whole.” “Not always, but often, if something is wrong, the other one of us Gdentical twins) sen- ses it,” Sue explains. The 20-year old remembers that in Grade 5 — one of the only school years when she and Shirley were in separate classes — she sensed, for the first time in her life, that Shir- ley was in pain. “My tongue hurt. Like when you bite it really hard, so that your eyes water and every- thing throbs. I went into the school washroom and was looking in the mirror to see if anything was wrong with my tongue, and Shirley came in with blood all over her mouth. She bit her tongue, but Z felt it.” A similar thing happened in 1988, when Sue had a car ac- cident. One morning, at about 4 a.m., Shirley’s screaming and crying woke her fiance, who tried to calm her. Insist- ing that something was wrong, Shirley phoned her parents: only a few minutes before Shirley’s call, another call had informed the Wal- laces that Sue was being taken to a hospital. “It’s uncanny, really. They're so much into each other’ x minds,” says Elizabeth. “They can finish sentences for each other — sometimes it’s a few words from one, then a few words from the other. . . if you listen to them simultaneously, . you piece together a sentence, then a paragraph, and a sto That happens even when one & = shouldn’t know what the other | is talking about. They'll be describing a dream, for ex- ample.” Such a strong sisterly bond doesn’t only pose puzzles for a mother; it sometimes creates { problems for twins. For example, the Wallace sisters share childhood memories but aren't always cer- tain whether they’re recalling real events or dreams they shared in their sleep: as children, they sometimes woke up to discover they had just finished the same dream or nightmare. Each woman has struggled to help her boyfriend (and her sister’s boyfriend) cope with her sibling relationship, a relationship so intense that Sue's college essay was entitled “An Unbreakable Bond.” When they were kids, the bond was so - obvious that even school mates Continued on Page 5 SOPHIE KONICZEK adjusts her shades while her twin sister, Sarah, seems more intent on checking out the hearth in the family’s Saanich home. / selection of mens & ladies European Leather apparrel and accessories “We carry a large at Victoria’s most competitive prices” $50” off Regular Priced Coat Photo by CHUCK RUSSELL Summ ee a SS SSE Ss LEATHERS INTERNATIONAL $40" off Regular Priced Jacket ais i $20° off Regular Priced Skirt or Pants M OFFER VALID WITH THIS COUPON ONLY - EXP.
