Frage My No praia ‘wrong side of the tracks’ movie PALACE (Caprice/Odeon) Max, a 27-year- old yuppie _ (James Spader) terminally _ despondent over the death his pretty young wife two » years earlier, is given a new outlook on life when he _ stumbles into a torrid _ relationship with Nora, a = sensual, vulgar 43-year-old burger joint waitress (Susan Sarandon). Silver-Sereen # By DAVID RYLAND ' Opposite sides of the track romances have long been a film staple, but this offering gets a jump on most thanks to a sassy, honest screen adaptation by Ted _ Lally and Alvin Sargent (work- Bing from Glenn Savan’s novel), full-bodied performances and keen-eyed direction by Luis Mandoki (Gaby: A True Story). After Sex, Lies and Videotape and Bad Influence, Spader cer- tainly now seems to have a lock on any future emotionally messed up yuppie roles, as he excels here once again. The real revelation of this film, though, is ’ Sarandon, whose vivid depiction of a tough, independent woman terrified by the pressures this new relationship poses, is the best work she has done since her Academy Award nominated per- formance in 1980's Atlantic City. Also ofnoteis Kileen Brennanin a small but important role as Sarandon’s spiritualist sister. © Like the similar themed Pretty Woman, White Palace gets its power from the turmoil and sense of discovery that results when love crosses the boun- daries set up by society. But un- like that rigged for easy consumption mega hit, where most of the energy revolved around shopping sprees and society faux pas, White Palace is fired by what lies in the ardent souls of its characters as they battle painful pasts, a compli- cated, intense present and a > precarious future. ***1/2 (R) Language, suggestive scenes, _ nudity. ® SIBLING RIVALRY (Odeon/Caprice) Kirstie Alley stars as a frustrated housewife stuck in an arid marriage, who succumbs to the advice of her goading sister, and has a lust-at- first-glance affair with a guy she meets at a supermarket only to have him drop dead of a coronary even before they get out of their hotel room bed. Much confusion and many awkward situations ensue. This outing proves nowhere nearas witless as Alley’slasttwo @ film fiascoes (thanks mostly to "the sensibilities of director Carl Reiner), but it’s still pretty flim- sy, with a plot so contrived that wh ead STARS James Spader and Susan Sarandon make an unlikely couple for a passionate love affair in White Palace. its hard to get very involved. Possibly worth a look ifyou’re an Alley fan, since she does add some shine to the lacklustre proceedings. Bill Pullman (Cccidental Tourist) also adds an amusing characterization as a nerdy, fidgety salesman who gets wrapped up in the mayhem. Other cast members include Jami Gertz, Carrie Fisher, Ed ONeill, Scott Bakula and Sam Elliott. ** (Mature) Language. MR. DESTINY (University Cinema) This feeble, pointless rehashing of the /t’s.a Wonderful Life scenario casts Jim Belushi as an Average Joe bemoaning the sad state of his life and Michael Caine as the magical title character, who gives Belushi a chance to see how his life would be different if.a single occurrence from his past was al- tered. Ultra bland writing and direc- tion result in a package too un- substantial to even be labeled fluff, and Jim Belushis dopey’ mugging is hardly a replace- ment for the kind of sympathetic warmth this role calls for. Caine’s sparse presence is a slight saving grace but it hardly makes the rest of this excursion into tedium worth sitting through. *1/2 (Mature) Lan- guage.
