With a glittering record of 21 league victories and only one loss, the Parkland Panthers team has emerged as a real powerhouse in high school volleyball. The 1990 league title was clinched with wins over Stelly’s and Pacific Christian schools, Wednesday night. Standing tall after becoming league title holders on Wednesday, the Panthers won the St. Andrews P Secondary school invitational in Victoria. Coach Lome Chan said his team beat Spectrum Secondary by 15-8 and 15-13 in the final of the tournament. Though Parkland easily clinched the first game, Spectrum forced the league champions to stage a late come-from-behind ly to claim the second game, he said. “Parkland showed a lot of spirit and bore down to come from a 11-13 deficit to take the second game,”*he said. Displaying great team spirit and abundant confidence, the Panthers played some of their best volley- ball so far this season, Chan said. “Good passing and strong serve-receive were the key to ever- ything working just right,” he said. -The Panthers’ dominance of the eight-team tournament was largely due to outstanding play by Dylan Gayler, Steve Lefebvre, Justin Gayler, Chris Good, Mike Golin and Brett Mikkleson, he said. Mikkleson played very well in defence, while Justin Gayler, Golin and Good provided plenty of offensive power with their great spiking skills, Chan said. Lefebvre’s energetic blocking and Dylan Gayler’s very capable setting also helped the Panthers to outplay their opponents, he said. In the semi-final round, the Panthers blitzed Belmont by 15-1 in two consecutive games, he said. Quarter final action saw Park- land dump Esquimalt by 15-0 and 15-3, Chan said. comfortably dispatched Stelly’s 15-8 and 15-6, and then brushed aside Pacific Christian by 15-2 and 15-9.
