A recent promotion in which
many local viewers won ~*30
days free” of The Family Chan-
nel from Shaw Cable was almost
too successful, according to
Shaw’s manager Jim McHugh.
“We've set a record for the
number of descramblers going
out on a single day” sald
McHugh. “Not since the launch
of Pay TV In 1983, have we seen
such a response. In fact we were
close to running out of descram-
blers at one point.”

The promotion was with a local
grocery chain store and, of the
thousands of “scratch & win’
cards distributed, some 600 local
customers have taken advan-
tage of thelr prize.

“We hope that our viewers real-
ize that with Shaw's “addressa-
ble’ computer system, if they
choose fo continue to enjoy the
service, they have only to keep
their descrambler connected.

gramming and movies. All pro-

channel appeals to a wide
audience. “Although primarily a
‘family’ oriented service, studies
show that about 30% of the
subscribers to the “Disney Chan-
nel’ dhe U.S. version) are older,
with no. children in the home, ~
said McHugh. “They subscribe

Currently, approximately 2,000
viewing households have Pay IV
in this area. Shaw expects this to
increase significantly as a result
of this current promotion.
