Shop of Horrors crew hard at work Putting together the Little Shop of Horror’s production is a three- month chore that involves over 70 students of Parkland Secondary, plus volunteers from the commun- ity and supporting staff. Stage manager Jeff Costin is enthusiastic about the work he’s doing, although once the audience sits down, his work may not be all that noticeable. “The set, when complete, will look quite simple but it’s fairly complicated to build,’ Costin said. Hinges on the side walls will allow the side walls of the Little Shop to open right up, allowing scenes to be played inside. “Side buildings are supposed to be in a slum area but they have balconies six-feet up so they have to be really solid,” he said. Props are realistic and include old metal dentist tools, that are actually surgical tools, but look gruesome enough to do the job. The largest Audrey II, a plant character Seymour first sees after a total eclipse of the sun, will have a slide at the back to accommodate the two people who will fall in, and a third who jumps in. Many cast members are in Grade 10 but bring valuable expe- rience from last year’s production of Grease. The musical, which ends in ” tragedy, won’t open until Dec. 18. But already, students are keeping their focus on a tight schedule and working hard towards a common goal.
