- News Prope Residential property assessment in the Town of Sidney this year is 48.66 per cent higher than during the 1989-90 tax year. “There has been considerable comment in the media recently about the latest Property Assessment Notices,” Sidney Ald. Stan Bamford said recently. “As well as issuing notices to property owners, the B.C. Assessment Authority provides each municipality with figures showing the average increases (or decreases) for each class of property.” The figures below are the percentage increases of 1991-92 over 1989-90. Property Class Percentage Increase 01 Residential 48.66 per cent 02 Utility 33.78 per cent 05 Light Industry 28.51 per cent 06 Business/Other 33.44 per cent 08 Recreation/Non-profit 17.74 per cent “Readers might find it useful to have this information, in order to compare their individual situations with the general trends,” Bamford said. The fact that assessments have increased does not automatically result in an increase of taxes — that is a matter for the council to determine next spring,” Bamford said. Last year, Sidney council was able to reduce taxes slightly for General Municipal Services, by about .5 per cent. Property owners who find that his or her assessment has increased more than the average, then he/she might wish to contact the B.C. Assessment Authority. The procedure is outlined on the back of the Assessment Notice and the deadline for making an appeal is Oct. 31. These figures are for properties within the Town of Sidney. Readers in other municipalities should contact their local municipal treasurer for the equivalent information.
