News TheReview Wednesday, October 24,1990 — A3 CaS " FIGHTING A BLAZING house fire at 10942-West Saanich Road are members of the North Saanich volunteer fire department. Fire Chief Terry Towle said if took 22 firemen using four fire trucks about 45 minutes to get the Oct. 16 fire under control. Much of the house was gutted and the Gamage was so extensive that the building seems beyond repair, he said. After being alerted at about 10:45 a.m., firemen found the house’s occupant was not there when the house went up in flames. However, a fire had been lit in the fireplace the chimney, Towle said. With Halloween night only one week away, the Central Saanich fire department has plans in place to keep a close eye on the sale of fireworks. Fire inspector Art Curry said all fireworks vendors will have to purchase permits to sell fireworks in the municipality. > The new scheme is aimed at trying to ensure store operators * comply with fire regulations gov- eming the sale of fireworks, he said. At a cost of $10, the permits can be picked up at the municipal hall between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Monday to Friday, he said. Permits will be on sale right up until @ct. 30 and store operators should note the fire department will be checking to make vendors have permits, he said. Fines will be handed out to vendors who haven’t purchased the necessary permit, he said.
