On Thursday Richardson will share some of her herb growing, preserving and cooking skills in a free presentation at the Central Saanich library, Winter Pleasures: book, the program will give advice on preserving herbs, growing herbs over the winter and using herbs for hearty winter meals. The program starts at 7:30 p.m. in activity room A of the Central Saanich Cultural Centre, 1209 Clarke Road, Brentwood Bay, and is sponsored by the Friends of the Central Saanich library. “My cooking changes in winter. I bake more bread, make robust soups out of root vegetables and flavor the rich stews in my clay cooker with the strong winter herbs: rosemary, savory, thyme and bay,” Richardson notes. “The cooler weather affects the appetite and the thought of a herby stew simmering while we are out hiking on a Sunday afternoon is truly a winter pleasure,” she adds.
