GOOD BOOKS By Echo Eburne TIGANA — GAY GAVRIEL KAY October with its dull, dark days and wet, windy weather has a tendency to keep many people indoors. A holiday might be a wonderful idea, but not timely or affordable at this point. Reading can be a magical distraction that is there whenever we have a need to get away. Books on'fantasy are in a special class of their own. At times it may seem awkward because the names, places and worlds are not ones we can locate or relate to. The magic, | think, is in the bravery, courage and romance of the characters. Like these characters, we also have our ‘down’ days, but we count on the good ones heavily. “Tigana” by Gay Gavriel Kay is a story that will enchant and encourage readers. The mythical land is being ruled by a tyrant king, but a group of people are trying to overthrow him and reclaim the country that they love. Basically, this is the good versus the bad type of plot but the secrecy and danger of the characters’ plotting is quite effective. With many twists and turns in the plot, the story is surprisingly easy to follow, and the characters, while being mythical, have feelings and experiences not unlike our own. | believe that “Tigana” is a novel that will captivate the minds and hearts of many readers. Even if you aren’t a fantasy reader, this book is an excellent change of pace.
