PRIME TIME

Street smarts for seniors essential in desensitized society ,

aving written a
column just a
short time ago
about the welfare
of pets, a timely topic now
would be our own welfare.
These are supposedly the
golden years, but contrary to
what others would have us
believe, life is not cushioned
by posh surroundings,
guarded and pampered by
paid attendants, all our

needs met and our wants at ©

hand.

This may well be true for a
smaii percentage of us, but even
in this haven of retirement, it is
just that — a small percentage.

What of the rest of us? How do
we make it in today’s desen-

'sitized society? How doe we.cope
+ with the increase in violence?

~~ How do we come through safely

. .. and whether or not anyone

wants to face the fact, that is the

name of the game — survival.
We have to learn to be a little

our doors, safety chains in-

do not ever let strangers enter.

there are ways to avoid putting
ourselves at risk: ~ :

First on my list is to park
where my car is easily acces-
sible. Ametered parking spot on

the street, or in one of the well-
lit, well-used city lots. Granted,
the tall parking towers are

cheaper, but that fails to com-

pensate for the feeling of: vul-
nerability one gets, walking
alone to one’s car in the dusk of
evening.

Another thing is to take a com-

panion with you when you walk:

or jog, and keep to well-used,

well-travelled areas. A dog is no

longer adequate protection.
When shopping, avoid areas of

the city frequented by pan-

handlers. [had a business meet-
ing one afternoon in the area
and was accosted by a very
threatening individual who
wanted money. Unfortunately
for him, I was late and in a bad
mood; otherwise I would probab-
ly have been intimidated into
parting with a few dollars. I

have yet to accept that begging, ~

or in this case, actually
threatening people for a hand-
out, should- be deemed accept-
able i in our society. The elderly
are prime targets. Shop else-
where, if possible.

potential rowdies on the bus,
they will likely congregate in the
back.

Try planning your shopping
for the morning hours. The
perks are fresh produce and no
line-ups at the checkouts.

If you drive after dark, always
check out your vehicle before
entering. Make sure you haveno
unauthorized passenger hiding
in the back seat. And when you
are on the road, drive defensive-
ly. Always be prepared. If a car
is approaching with too much
speed and behaving erratically,
pull over on the shoulder, or bet-
ter yet, if there is a side street,
turn off, out of harm’s way. Al-
ways anticipate, wonder what
the next person will do, and try
to be prepared for it. One can

at the wheel and still be a good
defensive driver.

Now, some woman, reading
this, is bound to say, “Hey, I'can’t
live like that. If I have to go
around never trusting anyone, I
might just as well be dead.”

And that, lady, is just what ’m
