This Week AT THE MOVIES — Once past the sentiment and cliches, much to enjoy about Memphis Belle EMPHIS BELLE (Capitol 6/Caprice) In 1943 director William Wyler made one of the most superb WWII documentaries, chronicling the last flight of the Mem- phis Belle, a B-17 whose crew needed to fly one last bombing run to be the first USS. fighting men to com- plete the required 25 mis- sions that could send them home. While not as immedi- ate or engrossing as Wyler’s first-hand account, this fic- tionalized presentation of that final flight offers much to enjoy despite frequent moments of sentiment and cliche. Most appealing is a well chosen cast led by Matthew Modine as a sincere but humor- less officer, and Eric Stoltz as a well liked, all around decent radio operator, both of whom Fireworks Sale! WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART (University Cinema) John Huston is best known to most as one of Hollywood’s greatest filmmakers. To many of his friends and co-workers, he was nearly as well known for being a stubborn, difficult, an- tagonistic and egocentric in- dividual. Perhaps no one knew this better than Peter Viertel, whose 1953 novel White Hunter, Black Heart, fictionalized his stormy relationship with the director as they prepared and worked together on the film The African Queen. In this film version of that book, Clint Eastwood produces, directs and stars as John Wil- son, a Huston-like director set- ting out to make an African Queen-ish movie while in the company of Viertel-like writer Pete Verrill @Jeff Fahey). Al- though keen to make the movie, Wilson seems even keener to do some big game hunting afforded by the African location shooting. Tensions mount between Verrill, who wants to get on with the film, and Wilson, whose bullish- ness about making a big kill reaches near fanatical propor- tions, ultimately leading to tragedy. Probably more interesting to film buffs than casual viewers, White Hunter... is hampered by Eastwood’s affected perfor- mance and an unsuccessful at- tempt to delve deeply into its lead character’s complex psyche. It does, however, offer crisp dialogue, fine location photography and good support- ing work. BETHUNE: THE MAKING OF A HERO (Capitol 6) Com- pelling, humanistic drama on a near epic scale about Norman the maverick Canadian doctor who was on the leading edge of the socialized medicine movement in this country, and did pioneering work in the front-line treatment of patients in the war-torn countries of Spain and China in the 1930s. Donald Sutherland gives an enigmatic performance as the passionate, volatile Bethune, whose incredible achievements were occasionally undermined by his hard drinking and womanizing. Told with little sentimentality, a sharp eye for detail, intel- ligence and dignity, Bethune makes for impressive and en- lightening viewing. ***1/2 (Ma- ture) Language, violence. COMPANY OF STRANGERS (Roxy) Delicate little film about a group of elder- ly women, returning from an ¢ outing, who become stranded in a picturesque wilderness when their bus breaks down, forcing them to fend for themselves for a few days. Finding an aban- doned house for shelter, the ladies, who come from various backgrounds, get to know each other, reminisce and share quiet moments together. This charming, simple movie may be too low-key for some viewers, but those who take a chance will find it difficult not to fall under its subtle spell. Seem- ingly effortless performances by thé small, wonderful cast go beyond mere acting, creating a beautiful atmosphere of lost summer days and sweetly a aching nostalgia.
