According to Vizsolyi, to host even a national swim competi- tion an aquatic facility must have a 50-metre pool and a warm-up pool. Commonwealth # Games competition also re- quires a deep-water diving tank. The creative solution proposed by the aquatic community is to build the required 50-metre pool, and add a shallow-water extension to the diving tank to create a warm-up pool. The ex- isting McKinnon pool, which cannot be used for the competi- tion and which would have to be staffed separately after the Games, will be converted to pro- vide change rooms, locker facilities and administrative of fices connected to the new pool complex. “With this compromise pool we stay within the $15 - $16 million budget,” maintains Vizslyi, “and Victoria gets a pool complex that @& water enthusiasts of allages and stages can enjoy.” Jim Reed, the Commonwealth Games’ vice president in charge of facilities, emphasizes that while the Commonwealth Games Society’s first commit- ment is to “guarantee that all facilities and venues for the Games will meet the standards of the International Sport Federations,” they must also be a lasting legacy for the com- munity, and serve the needs ofa variety of organized competitive and recreational programs. with respect to facilities unles: there is a guarantee of broad access at affordable rates,” he said.
