| News | “Sidney asking for @ suppor againsi @ library board The Town of Sidney is writing 2/ letters to municipal members of ie Vancouver Island Regional Library, asking for support against a move to eliminate local councils from involvement in board’ busi- ness. Sidney Ald: John Calder, acting as an alternate to library board representative Ald. Stan Bamford, reported to council Oct. 9 on a recem@plibrary board meeting. ¥ “There appears to be a concert- ed effort to eliminate local coun- cils from the board,” Calder said. “What has been proposed is that ppoard members will be reduced to 12 school district representatives # from 40 (council and school board representatives).”” ® # Despite opposition from the @dney and North Saanich library board reps, the motion passed and is going to the Ministry of Munici- @ pal Affairs for approval, Calder = said. : = ‘| feel we will lose control of sdecisions at our library. Even our library branch rep spoke against it,’ Calder said. # ## ‘he motion is for future Van- couver Island Regional Library board members to be elected as library board trustees — one for ‘each school district within the regional library system for a total of 12. The move is partly being made to cut the costs of meetings and encourage more frequent meet- ings. Currently, it costs about ,000 for the board to meet, #7 Bamford said. Meetings are now af four times per year. Calder was concerned about @ where a School District 63 repre- sentative would stand if a library f dispute occurred between Sidney @ and North Saanich about the joint- @ ly-used branch library. 3 Bamford said the recommenda- ™@ tion was made to allay criticism = that not all regional library board a members are elected officials. Ald. Bob Jones expressed con- mi cem about the possible cost of stipends for elected library board members. Mayor Norma Sealey said the move would mean “there would be more autonomy than = there is now.” f @ Council agreed to seek support 7 from the other 27 municipalities in expressing objection to the board’s motion. “It’s an unusual step for us but I think it’s worth the 27 sheets of | paper and 27 stamps,” Calder SF said.
