The conflict was resolved in August 1988 when North Saanich council hired another firm to supervise the fire hall construc- tion. Michaluk was returned by the voters as mayor in a byelection held Sept. 24, 1988. Despite the controversy, Micha- luk felt she has been successful on council. “Tm really proud of what I did as mayor and alderman. I worked hard on behalf of the district and I did my best,’’ she said. She is now enjoying the prov- ince-wide challenge of serving on the environmental appeal board. “It’s a real chance to be involved in environmental issues.” Ald. Rebecca Vermeer and Ald. Don Caverley said Monday they were waiting for Michaluk’s deci- sion before deciding whether or not to seek re-election. “T believe our mayor should make the first announcement,” Caverley said. Both were elected as aldermen in November 1987 for three-year terms. Vermeer is now completing her second term as a North Saa- nich alderman. Ald. Dee Bailin will seek a second term as alderman.
