Many Canadians have shown interest when I tell them that I come from Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe became independent in 1980, after the white-ruled Rhodesian government collapsed. In 1987, Zimbabwe had a total population of 8.64 million people of which 99 per cent were black Africans, with other races making up the remaining one per cent. By now, Zimbabwe’s population is over 10 million. Most black Africans in Zimbabwe live in the Tural areas, rather than in the four popular towns and cities in the country. Indians, Asians, Coloreds and whites are mostly found in towns where they operate businesses. In rural areas, people rely on traditional com- munal farming for their livelihood. In our culture it is a tradition that we live in a village comprised of extended families, with each family unit living in a round hut. These huts are made out of poles and dagga — poles plastered with mud — with thatched roofs of grass. Our rural areas are completely different from those one can find in Canada. For example, in : SHOW OPENS Tues. to Sun. Canadian rural areas, one finds a car at the back to overcome illiteracy — which has mainly Sunday, Oct. 14 a0 = 2 6 a of a tile-roofed, wooden house with piped water, affected people working on farms. 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Corner of Keating X Rd. electricity, telephone and a television, just to mention a few amenities. At the back of a rural area hut, one sees an animal-drawn Scotch cart, a large herd of cattle, plus goats, sheep, donkeys, a fowl run, pigs, rabbits and a garden. Most rural residents rely on farming. In Zimbabwe the majority of people who own beautiful cars are those in big business. It is quite rare for an ordinary people to own a car because they are very expensive. For example second-hand cars are sold for more than $5,000 (Z). In comparison, the minimum wage earned by wor- kers in Zimbabwe is $1,800 per year. Buses and taxis are the major form of transport one finds in towns and cities. In cities, the A culture with a difference|_4ame Those who operate the emergency taxis charge 80 cents for their services, while those who use buses pay according to the distance they travel. In the rural areas, many people eat sadza a Zimbabwe staple type of food. Sadza is made from meal meal — the final product after grinding maize (a type of grain) — cooked in hot water until it is almost solid. It is served with a meat or vegetable relish twice a day, at noon and in the evening. Breakfast can be just a cup of tea, with bread or pumpkin. Bread has also been a staple in the Zimbabwean diet for many years and is usually made at home, baked in a pot buried in hot charcoal. Our government is now in the process of redressing the imbalances which have been exist- ing since before independence. The main issue on the government agenda is land reform. Because most blacks rely on farming, the Government of Zimbabwe has embarked on a resettlement program where it allocates pieces of land to people who promise to utilize the land to become self sufficient. Like Canada which has a high number of illiterate people, Zimbabwe is also facing the same problem. However, with the introduction of education for all, the country is being seen doing the best it can The political situation in Zimbabwe is now stable. This is shown by whites who once emigrated from the country, but are now returning into the country after the president called for reconciliation. Zimbabwe is currently considering a one-party State system of government but has promised a country-wide referendum on the issue, which is still being debated. Like any other country, Zimbabwe has its problems, including a transport and accommodation shortage and a high number of unemployed people. However, the country is being seen as one of the most stable and prosperous in Africa and as a good place for making investments.
