J News | TheReview Wednesday, October 10,1990 — A5 « PUBLIC HEARING Continued from Page Al of water quality in these creeks through release of sediment during @ construction of the golf course and through release of fertilizers, her- bicides, pesticides and fungicides during the operation of the golf course, ~ the report said. The report was released at a council meeting Oct. 1. Council has not acted on the report and members reserved comment because they did not have ade- - que®® time to read it. The report says construction of the golf course may result is the destruction of fish habitats in the creeks from the toxic effects of ® chemicals used to treat the golf course. Another concem raised in the report is that waterfowl in the area may be harmed by accidentally ingesting herbicides and pestic- ides. And it says the building of the golf course may temporarily deprive trumpeter swans, Canada geese and mallard ducks of their natural habitat if the work occurs in the winter. The report recommends that construction of the golf course should take place in the summer to minimize the impact on the wild- fowl and that steps should be taken to prevent the ingestion of chemi- cal products by the birds. It also suggests ground disposal of sewage effluent should not be allowed due to the hazard posed by toxic waste leaching into water- ways in the area. While addressing environmental concems at a public information meeting he held for his project in Brentwood Wednesday, Berglund said he had not seen the study. At the meeting, he said the golf course would attract more wild- fowl than already reside on his land. “You can go to any golf course in town and that’s where the wild fowl are,” he said. He plans to start construction of the par-72 course next spring to continue until the summer of 1992. He also played down the poten- tially harmful effects of chemicals that would be used in the upkeep of the golf course. “The research I’ve seen says normal farming practices are more environmentally harmful that golf course developments,” he said. Only about 40 acres of the land would be subjected to fertilizers and the turf used would retain about 99 per cent of the pesticides used, he said. Association for the Protection of Rural Central Saanich spokesman Clarence Bolt said the much- touted 14 acres of ponds that constitute a key feature of the golf course would lead to the leaching of chemicals into Hagen Creek. The layout of the golf course would have to be completely remodelled with fewer ponds in the final design if the environmen- tal impact on the area is to be minimized, he said.
