TheReview Wednesday, October 10,1990 — All Feature “Show home shadowed by past * DRAPERIES * ETC. ‘UPHOLSTERY + ANTIQUES by Valorie Lennox The Review If ever a house suffered from character defamation, it is the house at Moses Point. The rebuilt cottage was owned by Helen Radok until last spring, when Radok and common-law husband Raymond Joubert went to trial on charges of conspiring to import cocaine into Canada. Radok was acquitted but Joubert w@iound guilty and sentenced May 31 to 20 years in jail. Meanwhile, the house was signed over to Joy Maxham, a long-time friend of Radok. “T took over an empty barn,” Maxham said, explaining that the house was unfinished last spring and the family were living in a small wing of the 3,000 square foot structure. Maxham moved into the loft over the 3,000 square foot garage in July and has worked to com- plete three of the bedrooms for use as a bed and breakfast facility. She has a deadline — the fed- eral crown plans a forfeiture hear- ing next year to seize any of Joubert’s assets obtained through the commission of crime. Depending on the outcome of that hearing, the house may be lost. Maxham has taken out a mort- gage on the property to complete the interior of the house. “I certainly am taking a chance,” she said. “It interrupted trimmed house. What can we do that is SO good that it will change the house, so whatever reputation it has is cleansed. “The house itself is beautiful.” In remodeling the cottage, Radok wanted to create a showcase for craftsmanship, Maxham said. The result is massive wrought- iron gates and eaves dripping with wood gingerbread trim, most of it cut on Site. The kitchen beams are carved and gilded in imitation of the beams in the Netherlands and the cherry wood fireplace is carved in Renaissance style. The kitchen floor is inlaid with patterns formed of wood and brass. The kitchen cabinets were built on-site of deep red satiny cherry wood. There is an entrance door taken from a Welsh castle and an elabor- ate 18th Century carved fireplace in the main hall, which doubles as a living and dining room. The upstairs butterfly suite is named for the butterfly panels, painted by Radok, set into the walls. Pastel paint rubbed like stain into the wood creates an iridescent finish for the walls. There are huge windows on three of the walls, A PAVED COURTYARD leads in steps to the gingerbreag- overlooking the ocean, and a pink and crystal chandelier from Italy. An adjoining washroom features mirrors frosted with peacocks, birds and flowers plus an old- fashioned claw-footed bathtub. “The house was meant to be a showpiece of people who did all these fine crafts,” Maxham said. “Look at the house itself. How can it be tured to good?” The location is one of the prime spots on the Peninsula, she added. “With all the fancy work inside, there is nothing quite to compare with the beauty of the view.” She hopes to open the house to use by more people — as a bed and breakfast, a meeting place for seminars or even a drug rehabilita- tion centre — both to finance the property and to share the work- manship. “The house has to work. I’m not independently wealthy by any means,’ Maxham said. “I won’t, however, open up the driveway to Greyhound buses.” If she succeeds in keeping the house through the forfeiture hear- ing, the property’s past may become an asset. || SERVICE o> on PERSONALIZED 6655 TRUDEAU TERRACE BRENTWOOD BAY, B.C.
