Where a little farm kid got the idea, or even the name, I don’t know. It was years before I got my hands on a tube of oils, and even then they didn’t have the magical name. I was firmly convinced that my paint box should have two extra tubes... a tube of light” for such precious things as stars, and a tube of “dark” for the blackness of night, or the shadows beneath a bridge. I had yet to learn that CANADA LIFE PROFESSIONAL FINANCIAL SERVICES “We are industry leaders in planning for our clients” ESTATE PLANNERS Emie Beland, CLU R-Einarson, U,CHFC DISABILITY INCOME SPECIALISTS 5 Denis Smith, CL Roy. It was years later before I got my Grumbacher oils. Even then, they were only the tiny tubes. Money was short in those days and I vowed to make them last as long as possible. Which, as anyone knows, did not advance my learning one bit. And things would probably have gone along like that for years, but one winter, I joined a univer- sity art class. It was an eye-opener. All the members of the class had a full range of supplies. .. large tubes of paint, a full assortment of brushes, and proper wooden paintboxes. They also had more money than I. I was always in trouble in that class. I could never make myself squeeze enough paint out of the tubes to achieve the effect I pic- tured in my mind. My instructor. mistook my frugality for inept- PT i 1 sil ill: fh ME ai, ness and | bore the brunt of his witticism. Ez Finally, after a particularly : bad class, { went home seething with frustration. Spreading newspaper on the kitchen floor, | I threw down my largest canvas, § squeezed every particle of paint out of my little tubes, and went® to work on that canvas with afm putty knife. (He had eS criticized my brushes.) ~ Ihave seen a lot of paintings off Mt. Rundle since, but none thats were executed with anywhere near the same amount of ray emotion. When I took the enc result to class, the professor injee formed me that it was the firsts thing I had ever done thatea showed feeling. He got thatpe right. = I learned a lot in those classes: We were lucky to have an in-jy structor who was serious about’ his work, who wasn’t satisfied & with anything less than our best, who taught us to seek out and discover the beauty to begs found in the commonplace. He taught us the difference between look-§ ing and seeing. Or, in the words & of B.
