The open” house was the first one held af the Institute since the research centre on West Saanich Road \ was opened in 1979. Church Services Se Continued from Page Bi library science at Toronto Univer- sity in 1957 and, after completing his degree, returned to the CNIB library, eventually receiving a pro- motion to the post of chief librari- an. After 18 years in the position, Brown decided that he should step down to pave the way for new blood. He retired in 1980. While on retirement, Brown worked briefly with computers before coming to Sidney in 1984, where he and his wife live. Brown believes braille is still being effectively used in homes, schools and work places. “Braille is now used more than it was 20 years ago but there is a decrease in the use of library braille,” he said. He said braille reading material is expensive and sometimes not easily available for all blind people to use, however. there is a lot of braille material at CNIB libraries. “We know that talking machines are available as are the books, but, no one can afford to buy such machines at $50,000 or books sold at high prices,” Brown said. Braille is an affordable way of alleviating possible illiteracy among the sight impaired who cannot use standard books without the assistance of the $50,000 talk- ing machine, he said. “As we move toward the 21st century, technology is beginning to make a difference by proving a potential means of access for blind people to a wider variety of litera- ture,” a CNIB National spokes- man said. : However the cost of equipment such as talking computers, scan- ners, print to braille translation software and electronic “paperless braille” make these technical advances inaccessible to most blind and visual impaired people, the release said. Braille books are used to access music, mathematics, science and as a means of communication in 85 languages. It is used by several million people. “Luxury living in a natural setting” a unique blend of 75 adult orientated carriage homes nestled throughout 75 acres of manicured and prestine parkland.
