super ferries, and so forth. Rather,
the focus must be on safe, environ-
mentally sound transportation.
More and more fossil-fuel (which
is not a limitless resource) trans-
port is not.

Thwaites is quite right in assert-
ing that drivers are one of the
major problems on the Pat Bay
Highway. Building an expressway
or freeway to accommodate more
cars will simply add to the carnage
that careless drivers inflict. If
Thwaites is serious about safety,
he (she) would certainly push for
safer alternatives.

Indeed, the Pat Bay Highway
has unsafe areas — only a fool
would disagree. AFGs insist that
these be corrected. The loss of
even one life is too much.

An outside observer, watching
us all scurry to work in our autos,
observing us ripping up precious
land to make room for more autos,
and noting our refusal to consider
safe public transport would logi-

Thank you for the fine write-up
in The Review, Oct. 3rd respecting
my candidacy for mayor in the
Town of Sidney.

Unfortunately, there is one seri-
ous error in reporting — uninten-
tional I am sure — with reference

-to my alleged statement “the

municipal expenditure of $3 mil-
lion on the breakwater.”

The sum stated was definitely
not municipal funds but rather $2
million from the federal and $1
million from the province’s lottery
pot.

There undoubtedly has been a
substantial additional amount of
municipal funds expended on the
whole port development which as
yet is still unknown to the taxpay-
ers and which may raise some
question in the coming election
forums.

peaceful and majestic areas in the

given to us by divine providence.
Land has become a commodity
not unlike silver or gold for stock
brokers to manipulate.

At present, Fama Holdings is
speculating that Greater Victoria
residents will allow the wholesale
trading of an immense part of our
landscape; gambling in a sense, on
the vulnerability of a non-
informed public.

Once developed, the Tod Inlet
area will spur yet another enor-
mous land accumulation involving
Partridge and Gowland Hills to the
west, and provide further impetus
for stripping the area of its beauty
and charm.

Such development will trade
natural beauty and majesty for
golf courses and barren tiers of
town houses.

It seems unforeseeable, yet very
soon our tranquil pristine environ-
ment could be replaced by acres of
cluster housing overlooking a new
pervasive scenery devoid of trees,
public spaces and natural beauty.
