Fifth-place finish for rookie rider Despite a couple of setbacks, Sidney mountain bike racer Dave Smith, 40, peddled his way to an impressive showing at the nation- als on the weekend. Racing in the Expert Veterans’ category at the Canadian National Mountain Bike Competition, Smith earned fifth place in the cross-country event and placed fourth in the downhill race. About 300 competitors raced in various different divisions at the event in Bromont, Que., spokes- man Sue McTaggart said. Smith’s division, which is for tiders aged 35 to 45, featured some provincial champions and other top competitors, she said. McTaggart said Smith did exceptionally well, especially since he has only been riding in mountain bike competitions for a year. “This is his development year and he’s going places. He'll go for the national team next year,” she said. “He’s hurting right now but he’s ecstatic about his result.” Smith battled it out with 21 other competitors in his division before placing fifth in the 39- kilometer cross-country race on Saturday, she said. “Tt was a grueling three-and-a- half hour race through clay-like mud that was six-inches deep most TheReview Wednesday, October 10,1990 — B5 of the way,” she said. Despite a fall in which Smith injured himself, he pressed on to overcome both fatigue and the immensely challenging course, McTaggart said. “More than half of the field dropped out because it was the toughest course they had ever done,” she said.
