eet News TheReview Wednesday, October 10,1990 — A118 Pisces mini-sub may go east HIGH AND DRY without a support ship is the Pisces submersible, the only research mini- sub in Canada. The Pisces, on display during the Institute of Ocean Sciences by Valorie Lennox The Review No federal funding for a support ship may scuttle local use of the Pisces mini-sub, now based at the Institute of Ocean Sciences on West Saanich Road. The mini-sub, built in 1972 ata cost of $2 million, is the only scientific research submersible in Canada. The institute has made a tenta- tive agreement to transfer the sub to the Department of National Defence, said John Garrett, Direc- tor of Physical and Chemical Sciences. He expected the military would move the sub to Halifax, where the defence department has a support ship, the Cormorant. That support ship came to the West Coast in June this year when the Pisces was used to locate and recover the black box and other components from a CF-18 jet fighter which crashed off the coast of Vancouver Island. Pisces pilot Al Witcombe said the search for the CF-18 was the only time the Pisces has been used outside of Patricia Bay since the support ship funding was cut three years ago. The support ship, the Pandora I, cost $3 million a year to operate. Without a support ship, the Pisces can only be used directly offshore, Witcombe said. Garrett said budget cuts forced elimination of the Pandora II, which was the least versatile of the Institute of Ocean Sciences’ ships. Another alternative is to equip one of the institute’s present ships to act as a Pisces support ship, but no funding has been available for that, Garrett said. “That’s left the poor Pisces high and dry.” The Pisces has been in storage for most of the past three years. If the mini-sub is transferred to the “THIS WEEK'S RECIPE” LEMON CHEESE military, Garrett hopes for an arrangement which will allow use of the submersible part of the time for research. Witcombe said the Pisces can descend to 2,000 metres, making it possible to use the ship to explore the entire continental shelf. The more temperate climate on the west coast allows increased use of the submersible, he added. Many scientists are still inter- ested in using the Pisces for research, Garrett confirmed. “That sub is very effective scientifically. There’s lots of inter- open house Sept. 28 to 30, may be transferred to the Department of National Defence and the east coast. esting things to do in 2,000 metres. The Pisces is very small and maneuverable and the pilots have become very good at maneuvering the submersible,” Garrett said. Witcombe wants to see a cam- paign started to keep the Pisces on the west coast and to keep the submersible operating. “The only way we’ll save it is if people write the Prime Minister and make an issue of it,” he said. Garrett said even part-time scientific use of the submersible through the Department of National Defence is better than keeping the Pisces in storage.
