by stint MIO heh, fats pretty id News by Mare Davis The Review A key spokesman for the Asso- ciation for the Protection of Rural Central Saanich is among four new candidates running for elec- tion to Central Saanich council this fall. Clarence Bolt, a lecturer at Camosun College, said he’ll run on a platform advocating more community input into council’s decision-making process. He’s an outspoken campaigner against golf course developments on prime agricultural land and is also a critic of the provincial government’s plans to upgrade the Pat Bay Highway. Bolt said egress and access to the highway must be made safer but the proposed Island View interchange should not go ahead. _ A major interchange would have a damaging impact on the com- munity and on the local environ- ment, he added. An end to the dumping of raw sewage into the waters around Central Saanich must be legislated by a future council, he also said. Further, Bolt would like to see council work closer with native Indians to deal with contentious land issues, he said. Another announced candidate is a critic of the municipality's new official community plan. Bruce Tobin entered the election race saying there should only be mini- mal population growth in the com- munity over the next five years. A family and marriage guidance councillor and UVic lecturer, Tobin said he wants to see an end to: “mega real estate projects,’ and called for a moratorium on any future development of Tod Inlet and the south slope of Mt. New- ton. Another of his key concems is that the rural lifestyle of Central Saanich be preserved and that the natural environment also be pro- tected. Tobin wants most of the green- belt and wooded land in the area to be preserved and said he’s opposed to golf course projects except on poor quality farmland. A more open form of municipal government is also needed, and municipal taxes should not be raised further, he added. Senamus Drive resident Joan Towler will also be vying for one of the six aldermanic seats up for election in November A mother of three teenagers and a registered nurse, Towler said she wants to see the rural character of Central Saanich protected against widespread development. Saving the municipality’s large tracts of green space also makes good economic sense, she said. With farmland being eaten up by ie developers all over North Amer- ica, Central Saanich farmland is becoming an increasingly valuable food resource and must be saved, she said. Central Saanich needs to reform its property taxation system to protect some homeowners who are shouldering too much of the tax burden, she said. A fourth candidate to surface in the early days of the pre-election run-up is Ian Cameron. A lecturer at UVic, Cameron said he wants to see the preserva- tion of agricultural land in the municipality. An opponent of golf course developments on all but the poor- REALTY WORLD.
