Abellan started working
with hair in his native Spain
as a mere child. He appren-
ticed as a hairdresser at age
12. At age 24 he went to
France where he styled hair in
Paris and at age 30, made the
trip across the Atlantic to
Canada.

At age 36, Abellan went to
the United States for a year.
He tried working in New York,
Los Angeles and Chicago but
after only a year, headed back
to Ottawa. :

Abellan started making
hairpieces when he im-
migrated to Canada. The first
one he made was for himself.
Completely self-taught, Abel-
lan used trial and error to
learn the skills he needed to
make quality hairpieces.

pieces. He also offers them

smile and if you want, he'll
make you a hairpiece that’s
crafted from human hair.

Human hair, while it looks
more natural than synthetic,
has some drawbacks. It fades
in the sun faster than syn-
thetic hair but it can also be
color tinted while synthetic
hair can not.

Whether made from the real
thing or a substitute, hair-

pieces have a lifespan of about
two years if properly cared for.
The cost can vary from $500
for an off-the shelf model to as
high as $2,500 for a custom-
made, hi-tech toupee
fashioned from the newest
material on the market called
Kapila.

Abellan offers a complete
hair care service for those who

have lost their hair. Hairpiec®®
wearers come to his shop once
a month to have what's left
trimmed and their hairpiece
shampooed and conditioned
while they wait in a private
booth if they're uneasy about
who sees their naked scalp.

Abellan recommends his®
customers buy two hairpieces,
if they can afford it.

“It’s like a pair of shoes —
nobody wants to have just one
pair of shoes,” he said.

Having a second hairpiece
saves the wearer time — one
can be in the shop for service
while the other stays on the
